The Nokia Lumia 1520 is the first high-end phablet based on Windows Phone 8. Generally, Windows Phone devices do not match its Android competitors in terms of hardware specifications but the Lumia 1520 comes with all the latest hardware such as a quad-core processor, full HD screen and a large battery.

The device is quite large and isn’t easy to hold or operate with a single hand. The back is very glossy and acts like a fingerprint magnet. It still uses 3 capacitive buttons on the front. The volume and power buttons are very flat and slightly hard to locate and press. When kept on a flat surface, the device rests on the camera lens and which might scratch it.

The 6 inch IPS LCD screen is incredible. It’s full HD and is protected by Gorilla Glass 2. It is the best 6 inch display that we’ve seen till date. It is really bright and displays punchy colours. The contrast and viewing angles are perfect. The screen’s colour profile can be changed according to preferences. The touchscreen accuracy is perfect and in fact the screen is so sensitive that it can detect the fingers even with gloves on them. Glance mode can display notifications and time when you hover your hands over the screen.

Although the 20MP PureView camera isn’t as great as the 41MP PureView camera in the Lumia 1020, it is still quiet exceptional. There is an LED flash along with 4 directional mics. These mics record extremely rich audio. The optical image stabilisation helps in capturing blur-free images and stable videos. Thanks to its high resolution, it can do 3 times lossless zoom while recording videos. All in all, except the lack of Xenon flash, the camera is perfect. There are a bunch of great camera applications such as Nokia Camera and Nokia Refocus which make it work like a semi-professional camera.

There is a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor which is the fastest mobile processor available right now. Apart from that, there is 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. There’s also a microSD card slot, in case you need more than 16GB of storage. The overall performance is really really smooth. Even the heaviest of games including Modern Combat 4 run buttery smooth. Windows Phone 8.1 is coming and it will make this device even faster.

The audio quality is very nice and loud. There is Dolby Mobile sound enhancement for better music quality through headphones. The loudspeaker is loud and doesn’t get muffled when kept on a surface due to the protruding camera lens. Call quality was extremely good. The Lumia 1520 is the first Windows Phone which comes with fast Wi-Fi ac. Other than that, it comes with Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, A-GPS and MicroUSB port. Thanks to its 3400 mAh battery, this device lasts 2-3 days on a single charge very easily.

Even though the Lumia 1520 comes with great hardware, it is a bit over priced. Windows Phone 8 is missing some key features when compared to iOS and Android.
