These days, smartphones are getting bigger and bigger with every model but what if you like a compact device with all those high end features? Time for the Sony Xperia Z1 compact review, a compact yet powerful device. Unlike other mini versions of flagship smartphones, such as Galaxy S4 Mini and HTC One Mini, the Z1 Compact isn’t compromised in any way. It has the exact same quad-core processor, 20MP camera, water-proof body and Android 4.4 KitKat which is also used in original Xperia Z1. This device is currently priced at Rs 35K which is around Rs 5K cheaper than the Xperia Z1.

The device looks and feels very similar to the Xperia Z1 with the only differences being its physical size which is handy. It can be easily operated with a single hand. The front comprises of a 4.3 inch screen, earpiece, front-facing camera and multi-colour notification light. You’ll find the power button, volume rockers and a dedicated camera button on the right. SIM card slot, microSD card slot and microUSB port are on the left. There is a single loudspeaker on the bottom while the headphone jack is on the top. The only problem with its body is, its back gets scratched very easily. You have to apply a protective film over it to stop that from happening.

The major drawback of the Xperia Z1 was its screen which had bad viewing angles. The Z1 Compact no longer has this issue. It’s 4.3 inch IPS LCD screen is bright, colourful and offers good black levels. It can even be operated with gloves on. White Balance settings are present if you want to tune the screen according to your choice. The loudspeaker isn’t good though. It has low volume levels and you can easily miss a call or two in noisy environments. There was no problem in cellular or Wi-Fi signal reception.

The Z1 compact has the same camera which are present in it’s big brother, the Z1. The 20MP camera is fast and accurate. It has a lot of additional options and effects. It clicks 8MP images and full HD videos in Auto Mode. Background Defocus mode takes 2 images for a great background effect just like the DSLR cameras. Timeshift Burst takes 61 images in 2 seconds so that you don’t miss any important action.

The top of the line 2.2GHz quad-core processor from Qualcomm is crazy fast. We didn’t notice any lag while using the phone. Even the graphics intensive games, be it Real Racing or The Amazing Spiderman offered extremely smooth experience while playing. Sony has just rolled out the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat for Z1 Compact. The whole UI is one of the smoothest and nicely designed ones. There are a lot of attractive themes and nicely designed widgets. 3 Mini Apps can be opened at once from multitasking menu and they come in quite handy at times. Quick Setting toggles can be customised, activated or deactivated as per preferences. You can also set which applications can show you notifications. Even system icons can be enabled or disabled.

It can even act as a media server so that multimedia files stored in this device can be accessed on other DLNA compatible devices like smartphones, tablets, computers or televisions. It has Miracast screen mirroring as well. Multimedia files can also be shared through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi Direct. There are a lot of sound effects. Some audio enhancements from Sony such as ClearAudio+ and Clear Stereo really enhances the music quality

The 2300 mAh battery might look small by capacity but thanks to software optimisations, the battery lasts 2 days easily. Activating the Location based Wi-Fi feature will only activate the Wi-Fi while you’re at home or work for improving the battery life. The STAMINA battery mode will intelligently turn off unnecessary connectivity options like 3G while the device is locked or in sleep mode. This helps in increasing the battery life by a good margin. It takes 2 hours to charge the device completely.

Overall, we liked the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact a lot. It has a nice screen, great camera, compact yet premium design, long battery life and latest version of Android. If you want a high end smartphone with not so large screen, the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is the phone to get.
